The Spanish In-Country Language program provides a 'total immersion' experience, offering second-year Spanish students the opportunity to spend six weeks studying Spanish in Peru, and experiencing the language and culture of the Spanish speaking world in its own environment.
This program will assist students to improve their language skills, aurally and in writing. Students will build upon their knowledge of grammar, based on what they have learned previously in first year Spanish. The Spanish In-Country Program will also include a field excursion to Cuzco and Machu Picchu, as well as excursions to sites of interest in the vicinity of Lima.
This program is a 1 credit point experience. Students who complete this program will be exempt from completing ALS200 Spanish 2A.
- Spanish language classes at Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP)
- City Tour of Lima
- Paracas Natural Reserve
- Archaeological and Anthropological Museum
- Pachacamac Archaeological Sanctuary
- 3 night, 4 day visit to Cuzco and Excursionto Machu Picchu
- Homestay with a local Peruvian host family

Faculty-led study programs will earn you 30 points towards the Global Citizenship Program.
To be eligible to apply for the Spanish In Country Program:
Students must have completed or be enrolled in ALS100 Spanish 1A and ALS150 Spanish 1B in 2018, but cannot have already completed ALS200 Spanish 2A.
Acceptance into this program is conditional to successful completion of ALS100 in Trimester 1 and ALS150 in Trimester 2 in 2018 and selection process lead by Spanish program staff.

Studying overseas doesn't need to break the bank. You could be eligible for financial assistance to help with the cost of travel, accommodation and program costs.

Available only for students on a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). The maximum loan a student can borrow for this study tour in 2018 is $6,665.
To access the OS-HELP Loan students must be able to demonstrate at minimum one (1) Deakin credit point would be completed in a trimester after the study tour.
We recommend students apply for their OS-HELP Loan as soon as they are accepted and enrol into the In-Country Language unit. Please note that the OS Help loan can take up to 4 weeks to process and payment deadlines set by Reho Study Tours are mandatory, regardless of the status of an OS-HELP Loan application.Further eligibility criteria applies. ***IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SPANISH IN-COUNTRY APPLICANTS***
A condition of applying for an OS-HELP Loan is demonstrating successful completion of at least 8 credit points in the course the Spanish In-Country Language Program contributes towards. For students in their first year of study, studying full-time, this will mean being unable to apply for an OS-HELP Loan until after Trimester 2, 2018 results are released.
Payment for the Spanish In-Country Language Program will be required by around October 2018. This means students will be required to make payment upfront for their experience and apply for OS-HELP as a reimbursement of funds.
Students are responsible for ensuring they review all OS-HELP Loan eligibility criteria.

Youth Allowance and Austudy
If you are currently receiving Youth Allowance or Austudy you can continue to receive payments while studying overseas as long you have a full time study load for the year. The following link will provide more information on the Youth Allowance
As a Deakin student travelling on a Deakin program, your travel insurance is free of charge for the duration of your Deakin overseas program. The insurance provided will even cover you for up to 10 days of leisure travel absolutely free!
Registration is not automatic you will need to register for your travel insurance. You will find a link to the registration form the in the DeakinAbroad Portal, once you are made an offer into an overseas program.
Important to note:
• Travel insurance is provided by Deakin for the length of the program, students traveling beyond the program dates will need to pay for additional coverage.
• The OS Help loan can take up to 4 weeks to process so payments deadlines must be met regardless of the status of your loan.

How to apply for the Spanish In Country Language Program:
Apply via the 'Apply Now' link on this page and follow the prompts to apply.
Shortlisted applications will be invited to an interview with the academic program coordinators. All correspondence will be sent to your Deakin email and/or mobile number listed in your StudentConnect.
3. RECEIVE YOUR OFFER (approx. 1 week after interviews)
You will be contacted via Deakin email with your application outcome after the interview.
If you are accepted onto the program you will be asked to confirm your offer and register on the Deakin Abroad Portal. This is a mandatory part of studying overseas with Deakin. You will also be provided with information from Reho Tours, the travel agency who will manage arrangements for this program.
If you intending to apply for an OS-HELP Loan, you should submit your OS-HELP application as soon as you receive your offer and have accepted your place.
