Program Description:
Inca Architecture

Inca Architecture

About the program:
Spend 3 weeks enjoying the vibrant Peruvian city of Cusco while taking the course "Inca Architecture". Cusco, originally established by the Inca and built up by the Spanish colonials, is a unique blend of modern and ancient – you will experience its quaint cobblestone streets, its modern markets, historical buildings and traditional people. This vibrant, high-elevation city is a dynamic hub providing the perfect setting for you to study during your summer break.

Location profile:
Cusco is a city in south-eastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. The Altiplano (high plain) is the second highest inhabited region in the world – you can just imagine the spectacular views from there! Also spelt Cuzco, this charismatic city is at the heart of the once mighty Inca Empire and is a popular travel destination. Each year it draws hundreds of thousands of tourists (by some counts almost 2 million!) to its narrow cobbled streets. Travellers are attracted by the unique combination of colonial and religious splendours built on the stone foundations of the Incas. And lying not far from the city is the country’s biggest drawcard of all, the ‘lost’ city of the Incas, Machu Picchu.
Cusco, the historical capital of Peru, is without doubt one of the most popular destinations in South America. So much so that its stunning architecture and remarkable ruins made the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.  The city is situated at 3,400m (11,100ft) in elevation, giving it a cool mountain climate and beautiful views of the mountains rising up all around it – perfect weather to hike and explore.  If you love culture and the outdoors, great food and fun people – Cusco is for you. The people are known for being friendly, the food is delicious and the nightlife is thriving. Don’t miss the rhythmic salsa classes. You can listen to Andean flutes, buy handmade alpaca hats and jumpers and cheer on the local fútbol team.
You’ll love walking along the city’s beautiful cobblestone streets and hanging out in the famous Plaza de Armas. This is the heart of the city, which boasts churches as well as many shops, restaurants and bars to check out. The Cathedral of Santo Domingo (also known as the Cusco Cathedral), a gothic architectural beauty and hub of Cusco’s colonial art, can be found here.
