Australia Today
The Australian Studies Summer School offers you a chance to satisfy your intellectual and cultural curiosity about one of the world’s most diverse, friendly and harmonious cultures. AIX290 – Australia Today will provide you with cultural orientation skills, analyses and interactions which will heighten your understanding of contemporary Australian society and its place in global contexts. The unit studies current debates, issues and concerns in the understanding of contemporary Australian society and culture. It focuses on the interests of international students who need skills and understandings for work and study in Australia. Through an introduction to the key issues facing Australians today, the unit aims to develop students' skills for working and communicating in the international context; locate Australia in various global contexts, within the British Empire, Asia, the global economy, politics and international relations. The unit takes an international perspective on diversity and difference in Australian culture and society, through a range of studies of popular culture, settlement, landscape and people.

Class times: Students are expected to be in class or studying during the following times: 10am to 3pm on most days, although some classes will extend to 5pm. Excursion days will begin earlier depending on the mode of transport and location.

Assessment: Class paper and participation 10%, Field Report 30%, Major Essay 40%, In-class test 20%

Campus: Burwood
Students will study at Deakin’s Burwood campus, which is just a tram ride from Melbourne’s city centre! To allow easy access to class and on-campus activities, students will stay at a newly-constructed student residence that provides a collegiate and well-supported environment with all the modern conveniences. Local students will run social events – city tours, traditional Australian BBQs, wildlife tours and more.

Fees
The total cost of the program is AUD$4,200. A deposit of AUD$900 is required by 27 November 2017 to secure your place on the program. Your fees include:
  • Tuition costs
  • Accommodation
  • Airport transfers from Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport upon arrival
  • Welcome dinner in the heart of the city
  • Visits to Melbourne Immigration Museum, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and Melbourne’s home of sporting events – Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
  • Learn to Surf lesson on Australia’s beautiful surf beaches (scheduled for Sunday 7 January 2018)
  • Bushwalk on the world famous Great Ocean Road
  • Social events with friendly Deakin staff and students
Fees do not include flights, the social program, food and personal expenses.
