FBL Chinese commercial law
Program

The Deakin Law School is inviting students to travel to the People’s Republic of China between T1 and T2 to develop an understanding of the Chinese legal system and its relationship to history and culture. Over two weeks students will participate in lectures exploring contract law, law of joint ventures, as well as foreign trade law related to intellectual property, labour, employment and dispute resolution.

Deakin students will be hosted in Shanghai by Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SHUFE) Law School, one of China’s key universities under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education. In addition to on campus lectures in Shanghai, participants will visit legal firms and travel to Beijing to learn the history behind the structures of Chinese law.

  • Lectures at Shanghai University of Finance & Economics
  • Site visits (e.g. Shanghai 1st Intermediate People’s Court, World Financial Center & China Art Museum, Great Wall,etc)
  • Time to explore famous locations in these cities and tourist sites

Program Costs:

The program cost will be $750^.
Please note, domestic commonwealth supported students (HECS) can apply to receive up to $8,149 from OS-Help funding to support your program. Please read the criteria carefully.

^Full cost of the program to students is $3,750. Eligible students will be entitled to receive a $3,000 New Colombo Plan grant to support the cost of this program. Please see below for eligibility criteria.

New Colombo Plan (NCP) grants
This is a NCP funded program offering 25 x $3,000 NCP grants. You must meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the grant:be an Australian citizen
you cannot receive a grant in a Host Location in which you have dual citizenship or residency rights;
  • be undertaking a Bachelor Degree or Bachelor Honours Degree
  • be between 18 and 28 years of age at the commencement of their program;
  • not have already commenced a period of overseas study in the same Host Location as the program;
  • not have receive more than one short-term and one Semester grant (with or without an internship) during their Australian course of study.

What is included?
  • International return airfares departing and returning to Melbourne (other locations are possible but may incur additional costs).
  • Twin share accommodation in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing
  • Transport to all activities in the itinerary
  • Site visits and industry excursions
  • Lectures at SHUFE
  • Visits to historical and cultural sites
  • Deakin comprehensive travel insurance.

  • Textbooks (if required)
  • Tuition fees for unit/s enrolment. 
 

Important Information

Important to note:

  1. Students do not need to gain approval from a student adviser prior to applying for this program – eligibility will be confirmed by the International Team via Student Services.
  2. Program cost is subject to change, students will be notified of final costs when applications close.
  3. Final itinerary is subject to change and changes to this does not qualify students for a refund.
  4. This program is available to Domestic and International students.
  5. A minimum number of students is required in order for this program to run, the Deakin Law School has the right to cancel this program if this is not achieved.
  6. Students will still need to pay their Deakin Unit fee for each unit they participate in as per their normal fee arrangements.
